Where to Find the Best Whole Cakes in Richmond
Richmond is one of London's most characterful neighbourhoods — independent shops, a strong food culture, and the kind of community where people still care about where things come from. But when it comes to whole cakes, the options are more limited than you might expect. Here is what to look for, and where to go.
What to Look for in a Whole Cake
Not all cakes are made equal. When you are looking for a whole cake — whether for a birthday, a dinner party, or simply because you want something genuinely special — there are a few things worth knowing.
Made to order, not made in advance. The best cakes are baked for you, not sitting on a shelf waiting to be bought. A cake made to order will always be fresher, better textured, and made with more care than one produced in bulk.
Real ingredients. Butter, eggs, fresh cream, and flour. The fewer the additives, the better the cake. Ask yourself whether the bakery can tell you exactly what is in each cake — if they can, that is a good sign.
A short menu. The best bakers tend to do fewer things, and do them exceptionally well. A long menu of dozens of cakes is often a sign that nothing gets the attention it deserves.
A proper recipe. Behind every great cake is a recipe that has been developed and refined over time — not a generic formula, but something with a story and a reason for every ingredient.
Whole Cakes in Richmond — What's Available
Richmond has a handful of options for whole cakes, ranging from supermarket offerings to independent bakeries. If you are looking for something genuinely handmade and worth the occasion, the independent route is almost always the better choice.
At WOLK Cakes, based inside our coffee shop at 16 Hill Rise, Richmond TW10, we make four whole cakes entirely to order:
Basque Cheesecake — from £35 Our own recipe, developed over six years. Deeply caramelised outside, impossibly creamy within. Available in two sizes — 4–6 servings or 10–12 servings. One of the most distinctive cakes you will find anywhere in South West London.
Honey Cake — £55 A Ukrainian classic, made from scratch with thin honey sponge layers and a light soured cream filling. Rarely found in London bakeries. Best eaten the day after collection, when the layers have fully softened. Serves 10–12.
Napoleon Cake — £65 Dozens of paper-thin puff pastry layers with rich vanilla custard cream, assembled entirely by hand. A showstopper for birthdays and dinner parties. Serves 10–12.
Cinnamon Buns — from £22.50 Slow-proved, baked fresh to order. Available as 6 or 12 pieces. Not a cake, but worth mentioning — the kind of thing that disappears within minutes.
Everything is made by our Ukrainian pastry chef, using recipes rooted in Eastern European baking tradition and refined over six years across Istanbul and Richmond.
Collection Only — And Why That's a Good Thing
We do not deliver. Every cake is collected from our café at 16 Hill Rise, Richmond TW10 6UA.
This is a deliberate choice. Cakes travel better when they are collected carefully rather than couriered. It also means you can come into the café, see where the cakes are made, and pick up your order in person. We think that matters.
Collection is available Monday to Sunday, 07:30am – 5:30pm.
